Oura CEO Tom Hale, to CNBC:
I think they [Apple] are unconvinced about the value of having a ring and a watch together and they’re not interested in undercutting the Apple Watch as a business
and
I think they’re probably keeping a close eye on Samsung and a close eye on us, but it’s hard to do this product category right
Thank goodness Apple has never built anything that’s hard to get right. Phew 😰
Mr. Hale is obviously spinning positive attitude about a giant tech company encroaching on their territory, but this has big Ed Colligan vibes when the Palm CEO found out about the iPhone:
PC guys are not going to just figure [mobile phones] out. They’re not going to just walk in
Tech historians may remember thus did not work out well for Palm, which is sad because I thought PalmOS was fantastic.
If Apple wants to make a fitness/sleep tracking ring they will do it. The iPhone ate the iPod. They sell AirPods and Beats. They have Macbook Airs that can cost more than MacBook Pros. Apple is not shy about building products that compete with other products they make.
My guess is they don’t give a shit if you buy a ring or an WATCH, because either way they make a sale.
And to be realistic, people who are interested in this stuff will probably buy both.
